Elana Brundyn has joined The Norval Foundation as Director. The new large-scale visual arts institute is scheduled to open in Cape Town in April.
She says the Norval Foundation’s aim to make art widely accessible to local and international visitors is what appealed to her most about the opportunity.
“I believe in the soft power of cultural institutions and know what a difference they can make and how culture become a partner in transformation and building bridges, providing means for connections and collaborations. The Norval Foundation will be an exciting addition to Cape Town and the region, adding another perspective to the cultural legacy of Africa and contemporary practices taking place both here and internationally,” she comments.
Louis Norval, Founder of the Norval Foundation says they were challenged to find a CEO for the foundation possessing a rare combination of skills.
“The right person needed to be an art specialist, have a very positive energy and attitude, the ability to raise significant funds for the Foundation as well as to take full responsibility for the operation of the museum. Homecoming Revolution assisted us greatly in finding the perfect candidate,” he comments.
Elana says although she was headhunted during a very busy time in her career, she was handled patiently and sensitively.
“I thought Homecoming Revolution was very professional.”
Prior to joining the Norval Foundation, Elana was Director of Institutional Advancement and External Affairs at Zeitz MOCAA, in the lead up to the museum’s opening. This position included fundraising through partnerships, sponsorships, membership programmes and special events like auctions, the preview and public opening events. She also founded her own gallery in 2006, Brundyn Gallery in Cape Town. The gallery had a focus on art from Africa and the diaspora.
